A little bit about the Summer Program…
The Bruce Awad Summer Program is a structured day program for children and youth ages 6 to 17 (please note the age range has changed as of February 6, 2025) with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). We strongly encourage you to view the links below as well as this website so you have a better idea of who we are and what we do. Look inside our classrooms, see the activity, meet the staff — watch the video here.
We offer a one-to-one or two-to-one student-to-staff ratio for a safe and happy environment. The program takes place in a classroom setting as well as out in the community including public swimming facilities. Our goal is to maintain or improve the individual’s functioning level, existing skills, continue the individual’s school program or routine and to provide relief for the families during the summer months. To achieve our goal we must put together the best possible team of individuals.
Our hiring policy requires all support team members (18 yrs. and over) have a Broad Record Check police clearance (BRC is NEW as of January 1, 2025) and that any final offer of employment will be pending the results of the BRC. All employees also require valid WSIB approved CPR and First Aid certifications as well as Behavior Management Systems (BMS) training. ASI will provide the BMS training at no cost to the employee. You will also be required to participate in swimming outings which take place in a public swimming pool. Our hiring process begins mid March and will continue until all available positions have been filled. Please note that, due to the large number of applications received, we will not contact you unless you are invited for a mandatory personal interview. Interviews will take place starting mid March into April.
We hire about 50 support workers each year. About half are usually returning support staff from previous years. We also provide 24 to 30 hours of paid specialized training which takes place over 3 to 4 full days the first week of July, prior to the start of the summer program. We also hope to once again partner with the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board and the Focus on Youth Program to bring in selected grade 11 and 12 students to assist with the care and support of program students.
